October 13, 2010 Norman, OK Earthquake

USGS Magnitude: 4.3

Oklahoma Geological Survey Magnitude: 5.1

October 13, 2010: Simon Brewer, and many others in Oklahoma, experienced a 4.3 Magnitude (USGS) earthquake 5 miles east of Norman, OK at a depth of 3.1 miles. This data may be preliminary.

Report:

I woke this morning to a faint sound of a rumble and my entire apartment was shaking! May bed was swaying from side to side and objects in my room were moving. The shaking subsided to weaker vibrations till it was no longer felt. I immediately thought, "Earthquake", but maybe a large semi-truck had plowed into my building. I lept from my bed and scanned the front of my building for a protruding tractor trailer and found none. I then checked the USGS website (found here) and discovered a preliminary 4.5 Magnitude earthquake (now has been adjusted to a 4.3) had occurred ~5 miles east of Norman, OK (my location). This was an amazing experience and I'm glad the earthquake was not stronger or I may have been in some trouble since I was caught sleeping in what I would consider a poorly built structure. The Oklahoma Geological Survey reported 5.1 magnitude, which is using a different method of measurement than the USGS.

USGS uses "moment of magnitude" (Mw): 4.3 for this earthquake

Oklahoma Geological Survey uses (mbLg) magnitude: 5.1 for this earthquake.

There has been a great deal of confusion regarding the intensity of the earthquake among many people since most TV Media have been reporting the 5.1 magnitude, while other online sources have been reporting 4.3 from the USGS. Both sources are correct, but are different scales of measurement.
