Norman, OK Ice Storm

Simon Brewer is currently documenting the possibly historic and potentially paralyzing ice storm, which will affect most of Oklahoma. The storm is currently unfolding and Simon will be based in Norman for the event. Read his updates below until or if his power is cut:

1:08 AM Jan 12th, 2007: It's currently 59 degrees outside and I am currently feeding my brain with Model Forecasts and it appears Norman could get between 1 and 2 inches of freezing rain. This could spell disastrous for Norman, because a majority of power lines in the city are old and above ground surrounded by many large old trees. If 2 inches of ice accumulates then power will certainly be out for at least a week if not more due to the below zero temperatures persisting over the area well after the storm has past. I have a propane camping stove and lantern and a few candles, but I'm going to need to pick up some water jugs and more propane canisters at the store tomorrow. Well, like I said; it's 59 degrees outside at 1:30 in the morning! And the cold front is about to roar through, so I'm going to get some video.

11:04 AM Jan 13th, 2007: It's currently 21 degrees outside and light freezing drizzle is falling. Some heavy rain/sleet showers are currently moving northwest of OKC (look at the radar image to the right). Yesterday the temperature dropped into the low 20's and never really changed. Freezing rain in the morning switched to sleet around 10 AM. The ground temperatures were rather warm yesterday, so the sleet turned to a slushy muck on the roads until early evening when the slush froze. Most roads in Norman are now covered in an inch-thick freesing rain/sleet conglomerate. Not much if any ice has collected on the trees and powerlines, so I don't think the people here in Norman have much to worry about.

Last night I picked up my friend Aaron Ruppert and we drove to the University of Oklahoma's campus to take some night shots of the storm. Like I said above; not much ice accumulation had occured on objects like trees and powerlines, so it was difficult working the sleet covered ground into shots. We parked on the North Oval (north side of campus) and roamed the campus from there taking pictures along the way.

Sunday is our last chance for significant precip, so I might not post again until Sunday morning.
